GLASGOW SCULPTURE STUDIOS
Glasgow Sculpture Studios' move to the Briggait in 2002 brought with it a number of changes. sparked off by increased space and an influx of members working in diverse media. Now. thanks to funding from the Scottish Arts Council. Esmee Fairbairn Trust and Glasgow City Council, they have acquired a bright. light exhibition space right on Bridgegate. where members and other artists will be able to showcase their work.
Project co-ordinator Lorraine Wilson believes this is an essential addition to their services. so that members don't necessarily have to take their work elsewhere. ‘It is an exciting opponunity to profile the diverse work that is being made here,’ she explains. ‘But it also highlights the changing nature of contemporary sculpture.‘
The first exhibition is a joint venture between (388 member Sophie Macpherson and invited artist Daria Martin. Manherson will be showing drawings and structures influenced by the theatre. while Martin's pieces are primarily film-based. Although neither works in traditional mediums. Wilson sees this as part of (388' changing remit. ‘The really exciting thing for us is to challenge what people think of as sculpture by showing a really broad and diverse range of sculptural practice.‘ she says.
The exhibition space is really just one aspect of the studios' evolving identity. as they now offer a series of evening classes and have formalised the idea of artists sharing their skills with each other by organising master classes.
The inaugural monthly exhibition opens on Saturday 10 April to coincide with the start of RAW: Real Art Week and will lead up to a commissioned exhibit based on the building itself to be shown in September.
