HOUSE CRAIG RICHARDS
Subculture at the Sub Club, Glasgow, 27 Mar.
Craig Richards is the DJ’s DJ. A man who enjoys the technical aspects of the job, the subtleties of mixing and the care that goes into constructing a set. Unsurprisingly he is someone who likes to be heard rather than seen, to casually observe the response as he builds the room with his three hour sets. All of which makes his residency at London’s Fabric more than a bit special. He finds communion with a darkened room and a great soundsystem more satisfying than playing the global vagrant role.
Formerly an artist whose commissions included designs for trendy Japanese beer Sapporo and clothing designer Paul Smith, Richards has been DJing seriously since the mid 90$, largely inspired by Terry Francis and Derrick Carter. Appositely his music happens to be some of the best 4/4 around, full of hook-laden, deep, shape-shifting grooves and lazy vocals.
‘Understanding the soundsystem has affected the simplicity of the music, the spaces between the music being as important as the music itself,’ explains Richards. ‘It’s all about juxtaposition, sequence and selection. Throwing records together haphazardly is one approach, carefully constructing and considering a set of music is another.’ (Kenny Hodgart)
