Art in the frame SEAM
Just across the road from the former Bulkhead gallery sits 273. a new exhibition space on Glasgow's High Street. This is no white cube. This is a no frills, vacant shop unit which stills bears the remnants of its previous incarnation as a grocer's. The walls have been left their original colour. a little rough around the edges, but it offers endless possibilities.
Going under the name of SEAM, artist Anne-Marie Watson and history of art graduate Liz Shannon are about to launch the first in a series of exhibitions with the help from Glasgow City Council, which gave them $3300 funding, and is letting them use the space tree of charge.
‘There's not really that much crossover between people who studied at the art school and people that studied at the university,‘ explains Liz Shannon. ‘So we're coming from slightly different angles; it‘s not really an artist-run space in the way that Switchspace or Transmission is.‘
The first show brings together the work of George Gray. Charlie Hammond. Lynn Hynd. Camilla Low and Anne-Marie Watson who. on seeing the space. have all decided to make new work site-specifically. What exactly the artists will come up with is still not confirmed but there are plans for sculptural works. drawings and floor-based pieces. Nick Evans and Laurie Figgis are the next artists to take up the challenge in March. SEAM also plans to build up exchanges with other cities. and to show work by people you many not have heard of.
‘There's Quite a buzz going on at the moment as the people in the show have been spreading the word quite widely,‘ says Shannon. ‘We love the space and we are hOping to do something just that little bit different.‘
