AURORA
Artist-run initiatives develop in response to the needs of artists. growing out of a desire to make and show work. experiment and support each other. Glasgow has long enjoyed the DIY approach with organisations such as Switchspace. Emerged and Cabin Exchange. It would seem that Edinburgh is finally playing catch up. With Magnifitat. WintogetherLosetogetherPlaytogeth erStaytogether. the Embassy and Total Kunst already established. the latest arrival is Aurora. set up by artist Ruth Beale.
‘There's a lot of good work being done in galleries in Edinburgh,‘ says Beale. ‘But there is that gap between graduation and showing somewhere like the Collective Gallery.‘
For Aurora’s inaugural show. Beale has brought together artists who share spaces in a self-run studio in Dalry. Over three days. a four- bedroom. traditional tenement flat in Marchmont will be transformed by site-specific installations Created by Matt Ayling. Jo Ball and Jessie Blindell. Distinct in style. but complementing each other's work. all three artists incorporate found objects to explore themes of man's relationship with nature. In addition to the exhibition, there will be music. projections and performances on the opening night.
For Beale though, Aurora is not only about providing exhibiting Opportunities for up-and-coming artists. but it's also about setting up artistic networks. ‘Groups are starting up independently and are helping each other Out and I think it's really important to nourish that level of artistic community and interaction.’
So for the next Aurora project. Beale will be working with Total Kunst at the FOrest Cafe in April and is in talks with Vague. another artist- led group. to work with Edinburgh College of Art's MFA students. And like all artist-run initiatives. Aurora offers a valuable insight into the Current contemporary art practice at a grassroots level.
