L’ivaEviL Glasgow School of Art, Fri 6 Feb

Unlikely as it may sound, Glasgow seems to be giving drum & bass 3 fair hearing these days. While 4/4 house and techno still carry off the top prizes, taster rumblings have been sneaking into many a DJ set. Not that LiveVEvil is affected much, having championed innovative, cutting edge drum 8. bass from day one. Hand in hand with that has been a very fine stream of guests and this month is no exception as Paul Rest et al welcome Matrix (Jamie

Quinn) on his first trip to Scotland.

‘Matrix used to produce quite dark stutt,’ says Rest. ‘These days it’s more kind of liquid funk with a hard edge. People at the Art School are going to love it.‘ Having come through London’s Speed club with a spate of other drum 8. bass-heads in the mid-90$, Matrix came to prominence with the launch of his Metro Recordings label in 1997 and has a reputation for

sophisticated dancefloor-led music.

As for LiveVEvil, Rest reckons it offers something quite distinctive: ‘We’ve progressed the whole audio-visual side of things. The VJs mix custom- made visuals like the DJs mix audio. I think that makes us quite a unique

experience.’ (Kenny Hodgart)
