BIRTHDAYS, BALLS & BELLES

Fri 6 Feb; Velvet Valentine's Warm Up, the Commplex, 36—39 Commercial Street, Edinburgh, Sat 7 Feb; Luvely’s 8th Birthday, The Liquid Room, 90 Victoria Street, Edinburgh. Sat 7 Feb; Lothian Lesbian & Gay Switchboard Valentines Ball, Assembly Rooms, George Street, Edinburgh, Sat 14 Feb.
January is finally over and after a month of staying in, saving money and eating healthily it is time to get back out on the scene and have a little fun. For this issue Edinburgh is the place to be with club nights a 90-90.
Women only nights are notoriously thin on the ground but in one weekend there are three happening
gay@list.co.uk
at once, two of them in Edinburgh and one in Glasgow. Bennet’s Girls on Top keeps Weegie lassies happy on the first Friday of the month. The following night it is Edinburgh again for the wonderful Velvet’s Valentine Warm-Up with DJs Michelle, Fiona H and Johnboy along with dancers, performers and art.
But why do these clubs all have to happen in the same weekend? Surely it would be better to have these excellent nights spread out over the month for more enjoyment or even for someone to throw caution to the wind and put them on on a more frequent basis. Not only do two of the women only nights run on the same night but Velvet also coincides with the lovely Luvely’s 8th Birthday Party. With the theme being the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ it will be an exotic night of charmers, slaves and queens . . . but dressed Egyptian style.
It also has to be acknowledged that Valentine’s day is upon us once more and, as if planned by St Valentine himself, it’s falling on a Saturday. So whether you are happily coupled, delightfully single or just plain old looking to cop off, there is absolutely no reason why you should be staying in. Especially when the first big event of the gay calendar, the ever popular Lothian Lesbian and Gay Switchboard Valentine’s Ball, is taking over the Assembly Rooms for another full on night of music, dance and romance. The Black Rose Ceilidh band with be in the Music Hall for all those who like a traditional fling, whereas Trendy Wendy will be in the Ballroom with some cheese, pop and classics tunes for you to do your ritual mating dance to.
