The music of Helmut Lachenmann ‘Music is dead.’ pronounced the German composer Helmut Lachenmann (pictured) when he spoke at an international music congress in 1996. Well, not so dead that ECAT can't promote a concert devoted to some of his chamber music for clarinet. cello and piano. One of the most influential of present day composers, Lachenmann. born in Stuttgart in 1935. is rarely heard in the UK. Defining what he meant by his controversial remark as ‘reinventing one's own concept of music with every composition'. so that music is re-awakened to new life, Lachenmann‘s music has a visionary. powerful and unusual beauty.
