Art listings

In our regular co/u/nn, a team of mystery artists give their thoughts on the current art scene.

Words: Artbug G

After what seemed an agonisingly long period of time for a certain group of artists. the WASPS (Workshop Artists Studio Provision Scotland) Studio building in Stockbridge. Edinburgh has had its future as a creative hive of artistic endeavour assured. This was achieved eventually by the artists; themselves. with a blit/krieg approach. canvassing every city cooncillor and several MSPs.

Having a grant application to purchase the building originally rejected completely by the Scottish Arts Council. WASPS was looking at imminent closure after 25 years if it didn't find the money to buy it from the Co— operative Scotlvfid. which. of course. had earmarked it for ‘new luxury flats'. Appealing to Edinburgh City Council on the gr0unds of cultural loss for the city. for the sake of more flats. the artists managed to spread the word rapidly through the city chambers. Simultaneously. the Scottish Arts Council now found itself under pressure and. not wanting to be the ‘black sheep'. coughed tip a generous amount. agreeing funding on the grounds that the Edinburgh City Council's decision was passed in chambers. Where did this SAC money come from. one wonders. when apparently it had just previously earmarked its coittptete budget? . . suspicious!

And so it came to pass. through a tremendous effort from the tenants of the WASPS building. that an artistic community will remain following the decision of ECC to give WASPS a sufficient amount to purchase. It does seem that fighting between the SAC and ECC and their respective attitudes to visual art/cultural funding criteria played critical roles in the whole saga. Power to the artists.
