ECLECTIC THE GOOD VIBRATIONS SOUND SYSTEM The Liquid Lounge, Glasgow, weekly Sun
It sounds like a right laugh chez Downtown Hustlers. For in the tradition of
many a great duo, flatmates Chris Marr and Simon Murray also work together, bringing joy to the ears of record-buyers at Carbon Records and, alongside Graeme Clark of the excellent FiveZOEast, putting the fun back into clubbing with their Good Vibrations Sound System.
‘lt’s a party night,’ says Marr. ‘We don’t take it that seriously. Even if someone came down with tunes, we’d probably let them play.’ Anyone who has had the good fortune to shop at Carbon will have an inkling of what he means. With these guys, there is little of the aloofness that has tended to
pervade dance music.
Marr, Murray and Clark, who has produced tracks with Harri (Subculture) and Martyn Jengahead, play an intriguing mix of rock, reggae, breaks and R&B, stitched up with a strong house thread. ‘There’s not so many straight house nights these days,’ says Marr. ‘We’re a bit like Optimo, I suppose, but with lighter, more positive records.’ It’s that good times spirit that looks set to carry the GVSS onto bigger and brighter things. Our advice is this: get there before the crowds do. (Kenny Hodgart)
