106 THE LIST 1 1 Dec 2003-8 Jan 2004

EVA ROTHSCHILD

Eva Rothschild's latest solo outing is among the best exhibitions at the Modern Institute this year. Given the illustrious band of artists who have filled the small gallery thus far, this is really saying something. Angular frames hang from the ceiling. clasped by tiny lacquered hands. There is a lot of weaving too, from a pixellated portrait of Nina Simone to the whip- like tubes that imprison a pair of found cat sculptures, again polished to a high sheen. This revelling in materials reaches its zenith with a brace of sculptures that seem to float magically unsupported at shoulder height, trailing loose fronds of woven strips from small spheres. It’s an odd mix of explicit hand-crafting and cool, considered forms, but one which makes for an engrossing, even thrilling show. (Jack Mottram)
