TRAVELS WITH MY MlGRAlNE Words: Artbug A

Migraine one was induced while I was enjoying a quiet drink at the Traverse recently. That'll be the alcohol. I hear you say. Well no actually. it was the visual affront to my senses that surrounded me on every wall. and the only relief from the nightmare was found during a visit to the toilets. The offending exhibition was Tierra de la Luz by Jamie Primrose. who had the misfortune of attempting to paint places in central and south America. The exhibition is overhung. badly framed in hefty silver and the paintings come from ‘the squeeze the colour directly from the tube‘ school of painting (ie blue is the colour of the sea and red. orange and yellow. the sky). His titles do nothing: Sunset from ls/a de Mujeres could be Blue and Red from da Tube and his prices are quite cheekin high. though some visually impaired individuals seem to have forked out.

Fleeing the Traverse I headed downtown to see what the new Open Eye/I2 space had to offer. Migraine two hit immediately as work covered every available sudace. Le Corbusier prints hung among pots. pans. jewels, Bond. MOrocco. dreadful Howson. cats. dogs and the like. The whole experience was one of greed. too much, far too much. Come on Mr Wilson. ever heard the one about less is more?

Off to see the Rae exhibition at the Scottish Gallery and into migraine three! Her work is overhung though her framing is immaculate. In spite of the vivid colours. the show looks tired and formulaic with a repetitive composition, bar two exceptions: Skel/igs Sands and Skelligs Storm. showing Rae at her best. Her worst is Benaderreen Fields overworked. flat. lifeless and overpriced at £25,000. In contrast. amongst the clutter downstairs is a fantastic work by Joan Eardley at a mere $217,500. a bargain, a cure and migraine gone at last.
