BOOK REVIEWS RHONA CAMERON Nineteen Seventy-Nine (Ebury Press €9.99) 0.. HELEN SAHDLER (ED) Necrologue (Diva Books £10.99) 0... Growing up a lesbian in Musselburgh in 1979 goes a long way to explaining the ways of stand-up comedienne Rhona ‘the moaner’ Cameron. The adopted daughter of a Ladbrokes rep and a garage worker, Cameron uses this fictionalised memoir of her 13th year to describe getting her first period, hating her tits and dealing with her father dying from cancer. There’s long been a need for a novel about a Scottish lesbian growing up experience, but Cameron’s effort only goes half way to fulfilling its promise. There are highlights, like going on a family caravan holiday to Montrose, but these are few and far between.
Hhona’s lesbian memoir does half a job
For real writing, try the exquisite nine pages of Ali Smith’s short story, “The Book Club’, just one of the 30 short stories of the dead and undead in Helen Sandler’s enterprising collection, Necrologue. Smith’s deeply moving tale has a woman returning home from Luton airport in a taxi, remembering a childhood summer when a local girl had been abducted and murdered. A meditation on home and memories, it’s a joy of a read. (John Binnie)
