DJ DEXTER

Freakmoves at Glasgow School of Art. Thu 13 Nov

Ilanches with DJ r (second right)

'Of course. sampling's not new,‘ explains DJ Dexter. 'But with the last album the approach was to think of a coherent thing, finding the really special moment on all of these great records and making them sit together in the right places. To build something entirely new from other things.’ There‘s nothing searingly original about creating music from other peoples' songs but the Avalanches took what was a relatively old format and revitalised it. And DJ Dexter was right at the heart of the album of 900 samples, Since I Left You. His work is proof that simple rejuvenation of a format is often more effective than the wearying search for new life on planet music. What is new music anyway?

A criticism sometimes aimed at samplers is that they suck the emotion out of music, but with Dexter there’s the sense that he sees technology as an instrument for good, not bad. ‘l’m finding a lot more records that I really give a shit about now,‘ he says. ‘I love DJing so much, it’s all about fun.’

Anyone who heard the Avalanches' session for the Breeze Block show on Radio 1 recently will testify to the energy created when these guys get on the decks. Regarding the peculiar kind of energy he encountered when the band last played in Glasgow, Dexter says: ‘A girl flashed her tits at me in the Art School. That’s never happened to me before. It was great.‘ (Johnny Regan)
