Traditionally focused on inner humility and physical calm, yoga’s image has been tarnished of late by self-publicists. Having evolved for 5000 years, this ancient discipline flowered in the west during the otherwise undisciplined hippy era. Decades on, our spiritually-confused culture looked to the Natural Law Party for enlightenment, saw them bouncing on school crash mats and kept looking. Geri Halliwell was appointed UN yoga ambassador. Un- photographed parts of Madonna were discovered. And Sting concluded a tantric sex session begun in 1979 while recording Reggatta De Blanc.
Yet yoga endures. ‘lt’s very popular all over Scotland and it has been for some time,’ says Gerry Kielty, yoga teacher at Balance, Glasgow’s new holistic health centre. ‘It’s not just a recent thing with all the celebrity publicity.’ Boasting a large yoga studio with four treatment rooms for chiropractic, massage, acupuncture and reflexology, Balance combines Kielty’s knowledge from years studying across the globe with the body alignment expertise of qualified chiropractors Caroline Arnott and Alan Maclnnes.
Catering for all ages and expertise, with special courses for children, beginners and pregnant women, Kielty’s classes aim to reduce stress, improve flexibility and correct skeletal alignment. Uniting body with mind and mind with spirit, yoga actually means ‘union’, perhaps the reason it has become part of the Welsh rugby team’s training. Certainly, says Kielty, the gender mix at Balance is evening up. ‘Things are changing. It used to be predominantly female but we now get quite a few men at beginners’ classes. We even get
celebrities too.’
There are three major styles of Yoga - astanga, iyengar and viniyoga - as well as others, and Kielty suggests newcomers ‘do more than one class, try different teachers and styles to find what suits you best’. For anyone really looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, meanwhile, the centre runs several retreats a year to such rare air as Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountains.
