While inspiring damp-eyed devotion from fans and the kind of alarmingly bilious rancour from their critics that only Skrewdriver would have been proud to stir up. Travis have remained level-headed in the face of their continued ascendance into international infamy. Thankfully. they have resisted following Fred Durst with humiliating public exhibitions of self-doubt and ragein an effort to try and win the ‘cool' folks over and instead have dropped down a gear for their most introspective and sombre album yet.
Drummer Neil Primrose‘s near fatal accident last year might have suggested they take redemption as a theme here but Fran Healy doesn‘t stray far from familiar terrotory. continuing his pleading in that plaintive puppy dog way. He only gets his heckles up when the subject drifts from personal to party politics. As cheesy as the phrasing on ‘Peace the Fuck Out‘ might be. the sentiment is one to be applauded. It‘s still when he's struggling with love however, that his songs feel most evocative.
‘How Many Hearts‘ and single ‘Re-Offender' are prime examples of the Travis winning formula but the excellent ‘Happy to Hang Around‘ doesn‘t sound happy at all - a brooding build up of Andy Dunlop‘s guitar growl. Conversely, ‘Paperclips' is a grating, knock-kneed mess and ‘Somewhere Else‘ is just wallpapery, while ‘Love Will Come Through‘ is uneasily reminiscent of Eagle Eye Cherry's “Save Tonight'.
While not as refined or as instantly pleasurable as it is two predecessors. 12 Memories is packed with enough solid fuel to keep the home fires burning through the dark winter months. (Mark Robertson)
