Reality TV is probably the hottest comedy topic in town this year and these three shows come at the subject from opposite directions with hugely varying results. Will Anne Frank Please Come to the Diary Room (Gilded Balloon Teviot,
until 24 Aug, 10.45pm 0
tries to displace the Big Brother theme into a WWII attic, with utterly insipid results. There is a decent idea for a parody struggling to get out here. and while Jill Peacock and Edwina Lunn‘s performances are assured, if unspectacular, there is a real half-baked feel to the script, leaving precious few laughs.
In contrast. Recruitment Stars (Gilded Balloon Caves, until 25 Aug, 2.15pm 000. ) is bursting with ideas, energy and a healthy dose of sass. Another two-woman show, this time with some interactive technological help, the show rattles along at pace, nailing the Big Brother parody perfectly, and blending in some nice observational stuff on daily life in the style of The Office. Julie Mayhew and Josephine Teale are at their best when ripping through the cut-throat world of low- rent television presenting, and both are beautifully natural performers with a real sense of comic timing.
Everyone Loves Me! (C, until 24 Aug, 11pm 000 its parody in a more conventional musical format. and does so in a slick and professional manner providing decent entertainment without being groundbreaking. The four-strong cast deals well with the story of an idiotic Big Brother contestant who shoots to fame, and the subsequent back- stabbing, wheeling and dealing and general nastiness that goes on in television. Having said that, the quality of the songs does vary somewhat, which is a shame because. overall this is a decent little production with some excellent individual performances. (Doug Johnstone)
