Work by Ellen Munro
Past Standing is the result of a recent call for submissions by the Changing Room Gallery. Artists from all over the world replied to the theme of souvenirs and mementoes with the final exhibition showcasing the work of 16 international artists. The works on offer reflect the range in response, as well as the cultural diversity of the artists
selected.
The universality of souvenirs as symbols of escape are of central concern to many. Martin Wohrl‘s three- dimensional wall pieces deal with daydreams of escaping to sunnier climes. These miniature landscapes are desirable, romanticised locations, paradoxically rendered in low-fi materials. However, Wohrl’s intentions are to contextualise and actualise these dreams, with many of the pieces serving as maquettes for large-scale models. Through placing them within an office context, he hopes to offer an escape from routine, allowing employees the luxury of lunching at destinations such as the Copacabana. Jenny Hogarth has metamorphosised a typical holiday souvenir of one of the most iconographic depictions of the female, the Venus de Milo. Hogarth’s miniature version has been cast in gelatine, becoming the ‘Gummi de Milo’, with a less dignified pose than her original form.
Elements of the show deal with a more personal interpretation of the souvenir. Ellen Munro has embroidered a wonderfully vibrant bird onto her mother‘s dressing gown. This beautifully poignant image alludes to the phoenix, with the creature acting as a metaphor for loss and remembrance. Jane Topping's paintings layer personal interests with everyday images. Her works are a fusion of Japanese graphic design, brand logos and pharmaceutical labels which aim to reinterpret the role of motifs on the consumer. (Sorcha Dallas)
