In a world slowly being polluted by the turgid sensationalism of Eminem and the flatulent bling that supposed superstars like Jay-Z and co are feeding us, the likes of Dalek are rough-hewn diamonds among shit.
Humble words, but the above description’s not entirely at odds with the doomy, strident, ultimately empowering worldview of last year’s excellent From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots album. Yet still the New Jersey trio‘s career curve has been steep. From Dalek and turntablist Oktopus’ first meeting at college in Pennsylvania, they’ve since collaborated with artists as diverse as
Faust and Kid 606, signed to Ipecac (Mike ‘Faith No is: u' 3...: More' Patton‘s label), and their reportedly fiery live shows are earning them high praise.
There‘s one last question we have to ask, though . . . it’s about that name . . .
‘No reference to Doctor Who,‘ says Dalek quickly, giving the impression he might just have been asked this before. So where did it come from, then? ‘Well, I just wanted another way to spell ‘dialect' - which is my tag - and it just so happened that I spelled it that way. It’s all pure coincidence, although I have to say — having been in this band for six or seven years - I now know everything I could possibly ever want to know about Doctor Who.‘ (David Pollock)
Along with the Anticon collective and their ilk, Dalek are surely returning hip hop to its roots - fearless musical experimentation coupled with incisive, confrontational lyrical poetry.
Not that their frontman sees it this way, or if he does, he‘s not forcing it down our throats. ‘I don‘t think we’re a band that really has an agenda per se,’ explains the confusingly-named Dalek (it’s the rapper's own name, as well as that of the band he shares with Oktopus and Still). ‘We're just trying to make music that sounds good, and that sounds right to us, y‘know? It’s not like we‘re trying to save the world with experimental hip hop or anything . . . for myself, the music is more therapy, it just allows me to be a normal human being in everyday life.’
