Thank goodness for the Filmhouse and GFT for showing one-off
screenings of gay movie-rarities. Italy's most aristocratic film director, Luchino Visconti. was inspired by Wagner's operas in making The Damned. his 1969 study of German decadence. He wrote it for his young Austrian lover Helmut Berger. who plays the amoral. mother fixated, mascara-wearing son of a wealthy industrialist family before World War II.
Never was a star more beautiful and ‘out‘ than Berger. You can also catch him in Visconti‘s autobiographical chamber drama Conversation Piece. Set in swinging-19705 politically-fraught Rome, Visconti made it in great pain while suffering from the after-effects of a stroke. Conversation Piece is Visconti at his most autobiographical. where an understated Burt Lancaster as a retired professor is forced to confront his latent homosexuality when Helmut Berger
moves into the apartment upstairs.
Indian-born, Toronto-based Deepa Metha’s 1996 feature. Fire. caused controversy all over India. The female director needed 24-hour bodyguards after receiving death threats from extremists. Charting the love affair between two New Delhi sisters-in law, all hell breaks loose, not just because the women are branded as lesbian. but because they dare to make choices without consulting their husbands. Stunning performances from Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das are at the centre of this ravishing movie. (John Binnie)
