Way back when the Criminal Justice Bill was just a twinkle in the government‘s eye, the Liberator DJs were the spearheads of London's underground free-party movement. Inspired by the punk ethics of disobedience and non-conformity, their rampant acid-techno parties became a refuge for ravers alienated by the rise of fashionable superclubs. ‘There’s no point getting snobby about house music,’ says Aaron Liberator. ‘It should
always be fun, first and foremost.‘
Alongside fellow Liberator DJs Chris and Julian, Aaron founded the Stay Up Forever label and released their definitive tribal techno anthem ‘London Acid City’. The Liberators have remained subversive by moving into deeper, darker territories, so it was only a matter of time before they arrived at the béte noire of Glasgow’s celebrated club fraternity. Mad Dog residents McLOUD and the Squatter specialise in filthy, corruptive basslines, while TYCHO, CO:M0 and DJ Real offer up live electro and funked-up house.
As an exclusive birthday treat, the Liberators will be playing together on six decks. Sounds terrifying? You needn't worry: ‘It just means we can add a few subtle twists,’ says Aaron. ‘Maybe even throw in some funny stuff.‘ In a scene swamped by purism and pretension, it‘s refreshing to find that the boys have retained the old raver sense of humour. Their attitude is best encompassed by the title of their infamous mix compilation: It's not intelligent. . . and it’s not from Detroit. But it's fucking 'avin it! (James Morgan)
