SCOTTISH SALTIRES
Grange Cricket Club, Edinburgh, Wed 7 May
Of course. the thing about the Scots is they secretly love the English. As a long-term expatriate Australian. I've long since come to this conclusion, which can be most clearly seen in the average Scot‘s indifference to that prince of all sports, cricket. While Scots will resentfully watch a relatively successful English football team, and a reasonably successful English rugby team, they won‘t play a game anyone can beat England at. These days, we Aussies will watch even our tiny minority of soccer players hammer the English with
Saltires skipper Craig Wright
satisfaction, and, when we field our first team, crush them like a redback on the toilet seat at rugby. But we still reserve a special pleasure in watching their cricket team stagger blindly from one national humiliation to the next. They really are useless at cricket, so the Scots won't watch their own team, in case it gets strong enough to beat England. While they‘ll busily watch every fixture of Berti Vogt's loveable. but basically talentless. soccer team, and are perfectly willing to spend an afternoon in the company of a rugby team who are built like Tarzans and play like Janes, the thought of developing enough to give the English a game, in something which Scotland might eventually win. irks them horribly. Scots just can't shrug off the desperate need to lose.
If you want to break this terrible deep-seated psychological problem, you might want to watch Scotland‘s forays into County Cricket. Of course there's a way to go before test matches with the likes of us Aussies are on the slate, but Scotland are starting down that road at last. With seasoned Springbok international all-rounder Jon Kent in the side, and some strong performances from the local boys in recent times, Scottish skipper Craig Wright is hopeful of a strong start. Start your love affair with winning by supporting him.
