Simple Minds were playing the first ever gig I went to at the Barrowland. I had done Wham! at the Apollo, so it was time for something a little more rocky. Along with hundreds of others I jumped about like an idiot, singing every song at the top of my voice and lusting after Jim Kerr.

that this thirtysomething - and no doubt a great many other slightly more mature music fans - is attracted to the idea of a Simple Minds convention. Simple Minds were huge in the 805 and into the 903 and as well as producing some quality albums such as New Gold Dream and singles including ‘Waterfront’ and ‘Don’t you Forget about Me’, they were also from Glasgow. Their popularity continues, as this convention proves. It’s an all-day affair with guest appearances from two ex-members of the band, Brian McGee and Kenny Hislop, and a video Q&A with Mark Schulmann. As well as chatting to other like-minded Simple Minders, you can hear music from tribute band Sample Minds and you’ll be able to add to your memorabilia collection from the trade stalls selling everything from previously unpublished photographs to backstage passes.
