SPACED OUT IN THE CAPITAL

With the recent fire in the Cowgate. Edinburgh has lost one of its most centrally placed artists' studio complexes. The location in the very heart of Edinburgh's Old Town was certainly a rarity. As it stands. artists' workshops in the city are becoming an endangered species. The Out of the Blue studios off Market Street are due to close as the property is being redeveloped. as are the WASPS studios in Stockbridge and possibly those in Albion Road. If you add it all together it's not a pretty picture for Edinburgh arts or artists.
The knock-on effect of this. of course. is that the remaining studios — of which many are independently run — start to go up in price. This is also due to the over-heated property market that just keeps rising. I know of someone paying 52150 a month for a studio in Leith. If you add on flat rent and take the average salary of artists. this does not leave you with too much capital for materials. Plus you have to find ways of paying the bills when the art isn't. This in turn eats into your studio time and makes it very difficult to balance all aspects of your artistic pursuit.
We have one of biggest cultural events in Britain that brings the city tremendous revenue. Is it not time that the city put some of it back into the arts? I feel that it has a great opportunity to develop the fire-blitzed site into something very special. There are of course many properties throughout the city that are empty. With the right backing. however, it could create somewhere inspiring to work. But is this going to be yet another opportunity missed?
