And that ain‘t all as Part 3 takes them to Aberdeen (with Pascal 7 Feb) and Part 4 sees them back in the Capital (21 Feb) with Andy C and MC Flux. Clubbers are a despondent lot of late. Sick of the superclubs and the shite trance they play, club kids are steadily taking it back to basics, and I don’t mean the house night in Leeds. Instead they want good solid party tunes that make them want to drink beer and dance like fools, which is good news for Headspin because that’s the vibe they’ve been supplying at the Bongo Club for the past five years. Purely a case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, Headspin has remained true to its original ethos of eclectic dance music provided by a skilful resident DJ display team. Guests have included Mr Scruff, the Psychonauts and various members of Manchester’s Grand Central crew, but it’s the residents’ mix of hip hop, funk and house that’s always oiled and conditioned this particular music machine. Because of this the birthdays have always been reserved for residents only and so, in keeping with tradition, main room antics will be managed by Allan Dunbar and scratch- tastic duo the Resonance. Through the back, Steve Austin follows a less frenetic pace, playing mild-mannered funk and soul and, because it's the birthday, early guests to the night can look forward to free mix CDs compiled
by the crew.
Finally, if you were wondering what happens to Headspin when the Bongo arts collective shuts up shop at the end of March, don’t despair, because the night plans to continue the beautiful relationship with an as yet unconfirmed but mooted move of operations to Moray House. (Catherine Bromley)
