60 THE LIST 2—16 Jan 2003

HOUSE SOULSA MAS, Glasgow, weekly Sat

Few people have the ability to inspire belief in a scene, a kind of music and a way of life. The garrulous ones hold sway and those with pure passion are in the minority. To wit: Andy Unger of Glasgow house collective Soulsa is a rare interviewee. Eloquent, full to the brim with fascinating anecdotes and insights, and able, even when expressing an unfavourable opinion, to invigorate the listener. This is a man whose appreciation of house music has been made keen through years of listening and partying.

‘We as a species have something intangible, and house music touches it,’ he says. ‘lt’s good to communicate that. We dance to a beat, which is a reflection of the beat of our heart. The 4/4 house rhythm directly corresponds to the heartbeat, and we’ve been dancing to it since the beginning of time.’

Unger’s capacity for putting natural euphoria into words is disarming. This evangelical appreciation of the music he showcases along with Lady Shae D at their club Soulsa, is indicative of the general sense of enthusiasm surrounding Unger. He recognises the unfavourable state of

the dance industry at present - he says it’s ‘unhealthy and ruined by too much tabloid journalism’ - but, unlike so many,

he offers a solution to the mess.

He sees local mobilisation, and the gathering of those with love for the scene as the way forward. ‘I think it’s time all the real people got together and supported each other. Pay each other lip service and help each other out, because it’s like one big family here in Glasgow.’ (Johnny Regan)
