INDI
OLD SOLAR ooo
QMU, Glasgow, Sat 14 Dec
It’s Christmas time, and there’s no apparent need to be afraid . . . n even if the Evil Reindeer’s advice to us was once Y’AII Get Scared Now. With a who’s who of Scottish indie on and offstage, and some sensitive soul even blowing bubbles down the front, there was nowt but joy and cheer
here.
Old Solar warmed up, and their sombre but affecting set was buoyed immeasurably by their hymnal cover
at
E REINDEER SECTION case
of ‘Always on my Mind’, which would
surely go on a mix tape of best live performances of the year. It’s bloody jaw- ., . _-._ __
dropping.
As for the Reindeer Section, there’s never a dry eye when they’re in the house. As befits the name, Gary Lightbody’s outfit are a Christmas sort of band, and listening to them means imagining snowball fights on the last day of school and log fires and falling for someone in the winter. It sounds soft but it’s true! And that’s even before a tear-jerking cover of Low’s “Just Like Christmas’.
You can keep your One True Voice, or whoever. The Reindeer Section are the
only Christmas number one in these parts. (David Pollock)
ELECTRONICA
BENBECULA NIGHT FEAT CHRIST AND REVERBAPHON TheComrr-iplex, Edinburgh, Fri 22 Nov ooo
Benbecula Records. home to all that is beautiful and organic in the New Scottish Electronica movement. They hold these irregular nights to showcase some of the talent on their books. This one was in an old converted church down in Leith and was shamefully under attended.
Far from a dream line-up. the first two acts — DJ Kasbah and Joni — have unfortunately tethered themselves to the nastier Jan Hammer/Moroder/ Airwolf 80s synth sound. Operator. who has an EP in the making. was marginally more interesting but it was the shy Melodica-playing Reverbaphon and the harsher.
spikier riffs of Christ that really set the night alight. (Paul Dale)

PROG PUNK
ANGEL CONVERSATION]
GUNTER PRAGUE/CHINESE BURN Subway, Edinburgh, Sat 30 Nov
Don't let its charty. after-hours meat market reputation put you off. For the Subway is re-establishing itself as one of the capital's live music venues — thanks to the folk who used to put gigs on at the Mercat — and it does a pretty handy job of recreating the backstreet vibe of days gone by.
If only the music had been more inspirational. Chinese Burn were well-suited to the atmosphere. coming over all confrontational in a punky. 1977 kind of way and banishing any kiddy. nu school hijacking of the genre to the recycle bin. Gunter Prague. on the other hand. updated a similar sound with verve and vigour. but at the loss of any satisfactory pop hooks — which one is Gunter. anyway?
Angel Conversation are yer proverbial game of two halves. Musically. imagine Yes being covered in stodgy fashion by Def Leppard. But PJ Harvey might well have sounded like their youthful-looking singer if she ever made it into her school
choir — just dodge the cheddary guitar solos and you‘ll be alright. (David Pollock)
HIP HOP BOOM BIP/BUCK 65 Venue, Edinburgh, Sat 7 Dec
Intelligent hip hop — as opposed to stupid hip hop. you might presume — is the new drum & bass. the new rock‘n'roll, or the new garage. depending on who you believe. And. while not entirely suited to moshing or shimmying. Buck 65‘s music certainly proves itself to be perfectly entertaining listening. flowing sweetly while running a mile from even the mildest ‘bitches and bling' sterotypes.
Conclusive proof that a minidisc player
soundscapes. Despite Buck 65's
Boom Bip in space
and an emphatic set of verbs can go a long. long way.
Boom Bip and his band. meanwhile. avoid the vocal route altogether with some marveloust spacey ambient
wired presence at the end. they would have called this sort of thing trip hop back when such terms were still in use. (David Pollock)
