Nl“.".’ Yl Ali ROUND Ul) HOGMANAY

Various venues, Glasgow & Edinburgh, Hogmanay.

Glaswegian clubbers will be spoilt for choice at New Year, with a complement of Hogmanay club nights that encompasses left-field electronica, big name trance dance and the best house in the land.

So why not try something different? Paisley’s Club 69 promises the appearance of a ‘very special guest from Detroit’, and the club rarely disappoints. Optimo’s New Year celebration at the Glasgow School of Art has become an institution since its inception four years ago. It’s the New Year choice for the discerning student, and the sleaze funk electronica soundtrack is another tasty way to subvert the hackneyed New Year formula. Mish Mash is another brilliant Glasgow collective playing out at Hogmanay. It’ll be taking over the Liquid Lounge with main man Oscar Fullone’s blend of house, broken jazz and anything inspiring.

There’s no paucity of brilliant house nights, either. As ever, the Sub Club are on hand to bring us Subculture, still the best celebration of house music in the country. For the first time in three years, they can hold their end-of-year party in their spiritual home on Jamaica Street. There’s a class night of disco-tinged house in the shape of Melting Pot at the Riverside Club. And not forgetting the big name tranceathon (Yves De Reuter, John Johnson and Corvin Dalek) that is Inside Out at the Arches.

Onto Edinburgh the (semi) official home of Hogmanay. First off it’s time to say goodbye to some of Edinburgh’s best loved house

Jimi Tenor at Optimo just one of several blinding nights this NYE

residencies both choosing the biggest party night of the year to bow out on top: Blast at Berlin and Atomic Baby at Cavendish catch them while you can. Other top residencies that aren’t finishing but are still pulling out all the stops for NYE is the super funky Headspin crew taking over the Bongo Club for the night. While everyone’s favourite gay night of hard beats, house and trance, Joy, does its thing at Ego, Majestica take on Play at the Venue for the full range of house with the Play boys (joined by Space Face) providing the best in disco, soul and funk. And if you are hankering after some drum & bass you can’t do much better than the BassTrap NYE Session 2002 manned by the Manga massive.

For some big-man house action there’s the glitzy Colours Subliminal Sessions (also in Glasgow) at the Liquid Rooms with Who Da Funk and Jose Nunez, while Eman provides the live vocals and smooth DJ skills at Audio Deluxe (the Honeycomb).

For something a bit different Bio-Rhythm and Do This Do That join forces and draft in the talents of the Jengaheads and George T (alongside DTDT resident Neil Anthony). And on a completely different vibe, Bad Manners headline the Citrus Club’s bill. (Johnny Regan & Henry Northmore)

ALAN MCGEE

DeathDisco at Barfly, Glasgow, Fri 13 Dec; Gilded Saloon, Edinburgh, Sat 14 Dec

Alan McGee and BP Fallon

Let's talk about fundamentals. Like. if music is cyclical, can the cutting edge ever really exist? The cycle is harsh and only the strongest genres Survive. This process of artistic natural selection means that scenes based on sui')erficiality are usually eschewed in a matter of years. Glam, for instance. That's why Alan McGee. ex-Creation head man and now DJ for the itinerant DeathDisco club night With 8P Fallon. has decided to accept the great musical touchstones that punctuate his history and that made him a household name. He has accepted the incendiary power of Oasis in a club envvonment and has. for the first time since discovering them. faced up to

the greatness of the bands that made Creation what it was.

McGee puts the ethos of DeathDisco (not the same Death Disco as the one at the Arches) into words: ‘Just rock'n'roll. man. it's just fun. We've played to about 600 peeple. just by sending out one email. It's kinda me coming to accept my own history . . . I think. We've got over thinking that we just can't play a Primal Scream or a My Bloody Valentine record. Let's go and see what Scotland makes of it.‘

(Johnny Regan)

I Not to be confused with Death Disco at the Arches. G/asgow, Fri I 3 Dec.
