Ladytron break into uncontrolable tears of joy on sight of this review
ELECTRONICA POP LADYTRON 0000
PRO FORMA oo Barfly, Glasgow, Mon 2 Dec
What is it with the electro crowd? Fashion focused they stand. boasting cheekbones you could chop lines with. too busy fixing their mullets and high fringes to dance . . . maybe support act Pro Forma don't do it for them. but then this Optimo-spawned trio don't even seem to be doing it for themselves. A menacing mixture of crunchy bass. blips and bleeps is overshadowed by the aloof and occasionally atonal delivery that only recording will mask.
Ladytron are. however. an altogether more exciting proposition: an immaculately attired. stunning robo-pop sensation of effortless icy cool. twisted loops. beats and 80s synths. Tonight's performance to promote second album. Light and Magic. kicks off with 'True Mathematics‘. a sexy techno track gone gritty with the addition of live drums and bass and sinisterly simplistic melodies crawling Out from underneath. Despite standing motionless for the majority of the set. this futuristic four-piece-come-pop-art-experiment make what is ultimately cool-kid
music enjoyable even for the less-zombified. (Camilla Pia)

DOLLY PARTON Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow, Wed 27 Nov 000.
Dolly Parton is an Icon - yeah, that’s right, with a capital ‘l’. Dolly also gives good chat, even if it is jokes that she was telling 20 years ago: ‘I hope y’all paid plenty for your tickets, cos I sure do need that money - it costs a lot to look this cheap.’
On her first major European tour for a decade Parton is backed by a viciously tight bluegrass band. Sounding as good as ever she teased the audience by starting the set with some of the tunes from her new album. Still singing about the pain of lost loves after all this time, even though she’s been married to the same man for 37 years, she

good country: ‘if you wanna have a hit you gotta have a hurt.’
Finally she broke and hit the people with what they wanted to hear: ‘Jolene’, ‘Nine to Five’, ‘Coat of Many Colours’ and, of course, ‘I Will Always Love You’. Trannies, grannies and ironic students wept like abandoned Kentucky babies. Unmissable. (Paul Dale)
Praise to the promoters who bring us transatlantic wonders into packed little clubs. Laura Cantrell's two albums have won her indecent acclaim. but it took the husband- and-wife team of Lonesome Highway — who have already brought us the likes of Allison Moorer and Jay Farrar since setting up in August — to deliver the singer to an
The Scottish connections don't end there. either. Cantrell's new album When the Roses Bloom Again (itself a title song whose words. originally attributed to Woody Guthrie. probably started life as a Scottish traditional song) is released here by Francis Macdonald's Shoeshine Records. It was the ex-Teenage Fanclub man himself who took the drum stool with a cracking little band for this hoedown.
With a voice pure and authoritative. Cantrell's instinct is for gimmick-free ClaSSIC country from bluegrass to 60$ country rock: a night of simple delights for anyone
