A Maverick Eye: The Photography of John Deakin L'ntil Sun 12 Jan. £3 (£2). John Deakin is perhaps not a familiar name in the world of photography. but he is a very important one. Deakin (1912- 1972) worked for British Vogue in the late 40s and early 50s photographing celebrities. models and his artist and poet friends in London‘s Soho. In his stark portraits. he made no concessions to vanity but in his street scenes of ordinary people. he was more sympathetic. This exhibition of portraits. street scenes and images rescued from the floor of Francis Bacon‘s studio. has been selected by former Vogue picture editor. Robin Muir. who has also written two books on the subject.
