In our regular co/umn, a team of mystery artists give their thoughts on the current art scene.

Last month two unique public art projects were launched in Glasgow. The first was a major commission by a leading Scottish artist in the grounds of Glasgow University. The second was the publication of an artist‘s book documenting a temporary project in the city centre. What both demonstrated is the need for more innovative projects delivered by cutting-edge artists.
Within one of the university's main green spaces. Christine Borland has created To be Set and Sown in the Garden. a design based on the discovery of a planting list for a 16th century physic garden. The final design consists of a series of low. wooden benches. slick and minimal in their construction, which are laid out like beds in a medieval arbour. Each bench has a white ceramic headrest. based on the blocks used in dissection theatres. which are hand-made and engraved with original plant illustrations from the proposed herbal list. Borland has taken the university's history and diverse practices as a starting point from which she has created a unique visual response that succeeds in both aesthetic and functional terms.
In contrast. there was the launch of a publication documenting the October project that happened on St Vincent Street in 2001. Throughout the month, 31 artists were given the opportunity to create work for one day only through an artist- initiated project. The results are an interesting and diverse response which raise questions on the permanence surrounding public art commissions.
What both projects highlight is the need for more risks in the commissioning and execution of public art. So next time you are driving along the M8 and you encounter a large meshed horse. just think what it would have looked like if Damien Hirst had got his hands on it.

Contemporary Celtic culture is celebrated in this exhibition about The (ireat Book. a 2 I st century Book of Kells which brings together the work of more than 200 visual artists. poets and calligraphers from Scotland and Ireland. Featured artists include John Byrne. Will Macl.ean. CaIum (‘olvin and Steven Campbell and the exhibition at (i()MA is the start of a major tour of the artwork before it is finally bound together into one complete book.
