DUB MESSENGER SOUND SYSTEM The Bongo Club, Edinburgh, Sat 7 Dec
The Messenger Sound System in full effect
listings Clubs
‘The Tubby’s one is a big night, possibly one of the biggest we have ever done.’ Steve, founder and operator of Edinburgh’s very special Messenger Sound System (since the late 805) is talking his night up. And why not? After 15 or so years of enveloping and sparking his audiences with a bass heavy vibe few can touch (especially in Scotland), the man has certainly earned his stripes.
‘lt’s a landmark night, it’s the first time another sound system has played up here with another sound system.’ Steve begins to digress. He is good at talking in tangents but listen and, like patiently absorbing the zigzag empathy that flows through his nights, you will be rewarded. ‘You see, our sound system is part of the thing that makes the night unique. We have a strong powerful bass and the character of our sound is quite different to any other night. A lot of places have a whole load of mid-range sounds which is great but that doesn’t interest us. We just want bass lines, not enough to kill a man but a low throb, a rumble that the other guy doesn't know about yet.’
Steve finally finds his way back to his guests on the night in question. ‘Anyway it’s a feature of the roots and dub reggae scene that one sound system plays with another under the same roof,’ he says. ‘This is everything we have been flying the flag for and pioneering in Scotland. Jah Tubby’s have been on the go since 1972, they have a legendary reputation for a strong rough sound.’
MCs Stamina, Prof Natty, Errol Bellot and Dixie Peach will be witness to the fitness on the night. It will be a very special one, or as Steve puts it: ‘It’s part of our fight to take reggae to where it should be: out of the chill out room and back onto the main stage.’ (Paul Dale)
