STEFON HARRIS
The passing of Red Norvo, Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson has deprived jazz of its pioneering wave of vibes players, but the instrument continues to find practitioners ready to move it forward in jazz. Stefon Harris is the hottest new name in that list. His two Blue Note albums laid down his credentials both as a highly gifted and remarkably mature improviser and a strong composer.
This two-night stand at
Henry’s is Harris’s Edinburgh debut, although he has played in Scotland before, with bassist and bandleader Buster Williams at the Glasgow Jazz Festival in 1997. Harris replicates Williams’s choice of vibes and piano as his frontline in a band which features a top New York trio of Xavier Davis (piano), Tarus Mateen (bass) and Terreon Gully (drums). (Kenny Mathieson)
