Waving not drowning
‘Three-piece with a female bassist like Hilary from . . .’ snip, rip and crumple. That’s where the JJ72 comparisons end and Easyworld begin. This isn’t a snivelting tribute to Mark Greaney’s reedy screams about snow, these are life-affirming songs careering from lust to loathing and released in album form in May of this year. Thank you for finally joining us.
Easyworld formed in 2000 in OAP utopia Eastbourne, home to the tragically talentless Toploader. Fired up by the boredom of their surroundings, Dav(id) Ford (vocals/guitars) met Glenn Hooper (drums) in a local record shop and after some disastrous gigs and the sacking of their ‘Locomotion’-loving bassist, they came across Jo Taylor. With the line-up complete, Easyworld put out mini album Better Ways to Self-Destruct on Fierce Panda 3 year later. However, the first single ‘Try Not to Think’ from their debut proper, This is Where I Stand, wasn’t released until March this year on Jive and signalled the point where guitar Britain opened one sleepy eye and took its first peek at the trio.
And what a sight: the frisky guitar pop torpedoed previous falsetto warblers; daddy wasn’t an alcoholic, he was a high-pitched, bi-polar speed freak, and it was an indication of more melodic swoop and soar to come. Packed to the brim with such gems as ‘A Stain to Never Fade”s lovelorn musings, the speedily infectious ‘Bleach’ with its punky paean to death by liquid and sexily woozy guitars of ‘You and Me’, the band’s debut has been slowly trickling into peoples’ consciousness ever since.
Easyworld continue the conversion with this live date at the Barfly, and a rockingly reworked version of ‘You and Me’ by Oasis/Ash producer Owen Morris is out in September. If its sleazy, fuzz-filled come-on doesn’t convince you, then their superbly clattering cover of ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ on the B-side will; Ford easily squares up to Sandy on those high notes and you can’t help but feel that Danny would fall for it first time.
