HOUSE PAUL OAKENFOLD
Gig on the Green, Glasgow, 24-25 Aug
When asked recently whether he was comfortable about his status as superstar DJ, Sasha commented that, although uncomfortable with his deification, he had to admit that it accommodated a life of musical and financial fulfilment. It’s the age-old trade off: big time adulation or
limited integrity?
If anyone is in a position to consider such a quandary, it’s Paul Oakenfold, the only DJ to garner more column inches than Sasha down the years, and one of the biggest names at this year’s Gig on the Green. Remixer to the stars, international DJ playboy, soundtrack producer and now fully-fledged artist, Oakenfold has what could be termed an impressive resume. Not all spinners can claim to have played out at such huge gigs as U2’s Zoo TV extravaganza, or have held fort at
Glastonbury’s main stage.
But looking back at his career, it’s easy to forget that the guy would be nothing if he didn’t understand the mystical craft of crowd-moving. When Oakenfold speaks about his art, it’s usually in reassuringly plaintive tones. For example, he’s reluctant to acknowledge that the crowds that he commands are there for anything but the music. ‘The people that come to see me do so for the music. They might know that l have quite a melodic sound, through the remixes and production work
that I’ve carried out,’ he says.
Similarly, there’s a genuine sense of humbleness when he speaks about the plethora of cool people that collaborated with him on his album Bunkka. How many dance albums can claim to have brought together Perry Farrell, Ice Cube and Hunter S Thompson?
If Oakenfold is humble, it’s certainly not because of the fawning press coverage that he’s had over the last ten years. Hyperbole follows this man around like young ladies with light-sticks follow Judge Jules. That’s why his set at this year’s Gig on the Green will be an interesting one. Glasgow crowds may be renowned for their fervour, but they’re also honest. Put politely, they know how to vocalise their distaste, so the acid test occurs on 25 August. (Johnny Regan)
