I The Funk Stop at Moda. 9pm—lam. Free. Weekly. Ally Sandler and Richie McColm play all the very best in Motown. funk. soul and disco to an appreciative mixed crowd in this beautiful Merchant City bar. Sophisticated. classy and soulful.

I Kevin Austen at Nieo‘s. ()ptn—mid- night. Free. Weekly. Chart music and drinks promos all night long. A winning formula. judging by the business of this bar.

I The Lansdovvne Sessions at the Lansdowne Bar. 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. Jonnie Five and Brendan Hessle (Juice) get the funk flowin‘ with retro electro pop and breakers classics in this classic West End bar.

I Martyn at Cul de Sac. 9pm—mid- night. Free. Weekly. You can‘t keep a good thing down. The Jengaheads are one of the hardest working outfits in town. and this pre-club set frotn this half. Martyn. is consistently great. Drop by the lane tonight.

I Mark Robb at Moloco (West End). 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. DJ Mark Robb transforms this former pakora bar into a time machine for the night. revisiting the funkiest years humanity has yet experi- enced. Expect widespread merry-making. I Nico’s at Nico‘s. 9pm--midnight. Free. Weekly. Get into Nico‘s for a cheesy pep talk before heading out to disgrace yourself in a Sauchiehall Street club or kebab emporium. Classy.

I October at the October Cafe. 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. DJ Vance turns up the volume with his Babaza pre- club party every Thu night. with the very best club classics and house anthems.

If you‘ve been to the Shed at weekends then you‘ll know it's hard to get to the DJ and make a request if you‘ve got a real thing for a song. whether it‘s old. new or a bit different see DJ Euan and he‘ll do his best to make your dancelloor dreams come true.

I Salsa for Beginners at Cuba Norte. 7pm—midnight. £4 (£3). Weekly. The rhythm is inside us all. so get up and acknowledge the power of salsa. Classes start at 8pm. but fill up on tapas until your time comes.

I Shae D at Air Organic. 9pm—mid- night. Free. Weekly. One half of the superb Soulsa crew takes to the decks at this chilled Thu night pre-club session. I Spy at Spy. 9pm—midnight. Free. Weekly. Simon Cordiner (Traxx) does his thang and delivers some quality house and funky grooves.

I Virunga at Brel. 9pm—midnight. Free. 8 Aug. Fortnightly. DJ Tchico serves up the best in ghetto grooves and Caribbean beats.

I Columbian at the Asylum Back Room. 8pm-lam. Free to CUSU mem- bers: £l otherwise. Weekly. Put some breakin’ funk in your trunk. with this entertaining night of student madness.

I Freakmoves at Glasgow School of Art. I lpm—3am. £4 (£3). Weekly. Dema and Mr Nice once again invite us to take a trip down the funky lane. As two of Glasgow‘s most skilled hip hoppers. they‘ve got the skills to pay the bills.

I Funhouse at Barfly. Next date 29 Aug.

I Homework at Vault. l lpm—3am. £5 (£4). Weekly. Ian and Stevie man the box. so all insecurities over the tunes are dispelled. This night aims for student happiness without compromising the quality levels.

I Hype at Cube. 1 l.3()pm-3am. £3 (£2). Weekly. Jitn Da Best teams up with the Hype crew to put on a night of twist- ed. ultra-funky house. Plenty of cheap booze makes this a fun night out.

I Polo For Meat the Polo Lounge. l()pm-lam. Free. Weekly. You. the lucky punter. take the helm tonight. as request cards are available over the bar and in the booth. Notice for the unimaginativc ones: ‘I Am What I Am' is prohibited by law and punishable by spanking.

Weekly. Hi-fi Sean (Hi-Fidelity) and Hushpuppy (Divine) perform cheap deck suckin‘ to disceau. dumb electro and 80s phunk. They advise you to act up. dress down. play easy to get.

I Skint at the C athouse. l lpm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. Very tnuch a night to reflect what's going on in Glasgow at the moment. Tough chemical breaks and beats. rock and indie for a crowd tnuch like the one outside the Gallery of Modern Art.

I Soul Shaker at Mas. l lpm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. An undiscovered gem. We have a mixed bag of electro. techno. house and funk courtesy of Dirty Larry and Danny Two-stroke.

I Trash at Trash. l().3()pm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. More of a spectacle than a night out. with drunken students and footballers from wall to wall. Insanely cheap drinks mean a huge queue almost every night. Mind the bouncers. though. I Traxx at the Arches. Next date the. I 1210 at Babaza. 8pm—3am. Free before I lpm; £4 (£3) after. Weekly. Literally underground club housing some huge vocal house and garage loveliness deployed weekly by Ian Thomson and Vance.

I Mce Ass Nice at the Velvet Rooms. 1 lpm—3am. £4 (free with stu- dent ID). Weekly. Don‘t be fooled by the plush interior: the Velvet crew could teach the young whippersnappers on the scene a thing or three about alcoholic dancing. Upstairs. rotational residents

take it in turns to provide the commercial R&B and hip hop selections. Downstairs. James Doc Jnr plays Ibiza anthems all night long.

I Venom at Alaska. I lpm—3am. £3. Weekly. New gay night for the funky

' club up the lane. It‘s glamour with a

hammer. and this celebration of sexuality is resolutely straight-friendly.

I Loveshack at Fury Murry‘s.

l lpm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. Going through a renaissance in recent years. Fury‘s is peopled week in. week out by a crowd that want a night of unpretentious partying. Jim and Phil wow them with a blend of commercial classics. vintage indie and a touch of disco for those in sequins.

I Madhouse at Shack. l().3()pm—3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. A tnassively popular night. Student anthems are duly deployed by DJ CJ.

I Rumble at the Garage. I lpm-3am. £4 (£2). Weekly. How popular is this

night? How many people have fallen

Insanely successful night based on a complex numerical flirting system; everyone gets a number upon entry. then. if someone catches your eye. you write their number on the board next to your own. with the idea being that they then rush up to you and get into a bit ofjiggy-jiggy. Music-wise. it‘s commercial house and trance from Sexy Steve and Kinky Kenny. Bo selec- ill.

I Penny and Pound at Destiny. l()pm—3am. £2 before 1 1pm: £3 after. Weekly. In for one penny (well. not real- ly). and drinks for £1. Any new night based on a system this crazy deserves

some respect.

I Syntax Uniting east and west in the name of hard techno funk grooves. Syntax regulars Nik and Jace of Monox and Gain bring in Edinburgh’s Hwatsong for a ses- sion comprised entirely of the freshest darkest dance. Soundhaus, Fri 2 Aug.

I Freelance Science One half of the mighty Universal Principles. Ewan Pearson, takes over premier twisted house night Freelance Science for this date. This man knows how to blow up a spot. A/aska, week/y, Sat 3 Aug.
