MR V
Audio Deluxe, Honeycomb, Edinburgh, Sat 27 Jul
The vagaries of international time- keeping mean that while I call Mr V at 4pm. the New Yorker still thinks its
1 tam. Still, unlike a lot of Jocks yOu could mention. Victor Font's been up for a while and is half way through his ‘Iistening hour'. ‘I get sent loads of records and this is when I play them to myself.‘ he says. 'It's mainly house. I get some R88 and hip hop as well. I stay away from pop though. I'm into everything underground. l host this Saturday party at this small bar where I play whatever I want. classic records. old Santana and Stevie Wonder. new and old R88 and deep house — eveiything's got to be soulful. Lots of deep hOuse. That's what I love and what I'm notorious for.‘
Font isn't a big name on the scene JLISl yet. but if the mates make the man. he's well on the way. The 28- year-old. of Puerto Rican descent. out his teeth at parties in his native Manhattan before getting his break deing the lights fOi 'Little' Louie Vega. Vega. one half of legendary duo Masters at Work alongSide Kenny 'Dope' Gonzales. liked what he saw. and Font was soon travelling the world with the pair as their assistant.
Font is starting to step out of their shadow. His first production work will be out before the end of the year on UndergrOund Collective. And the several hundred people at Audio Deluxe shouldn't be too intimidating for the man: besides a range of New York residencies. he recently MCed at the massive Gatecrasher
liighth birthday titnc for the progressive house night with grooves from Michael Kilkie and Stuart Duncan.
