New in the Galleries: Curator’s
Scots pin their hopes on a hole in one
At the last major golf tournament held in Scotland. a Japanese journalist commented something vaguely approximating to: ‘It's a good competition on a great course. but why don't you hold it in summer?’ It was July. At this year‘s US Open. Golf Digest magazine distributed badges inscribed: ‘Be nice to Monty.’ lt Scotland is indeed the home of golf. then we're in real danger of repossession. Luckily the disastrous weather of the US Open will take the pressure off the Murrfield tournament. Rain in Scotland is miserable. but usually not life threatening. Redemption may not be so forthcoming on the course. Scot Colin Montgomerie has yet to win a major. and most of the other ten Scots taking part can only hope for a miracle to claim much of the £3.8m prize kitty. Last year's wrnner. David Duvall. will be gunning for glory. alongside favourites such as Woods. Els. Garcia and old timers including Faldo. Ballesteros. Norman and Lyle.
An exciting prospect for avid fans and lay persons alike.
Whilst Scotland struggles to compete with climate and leadership. it comes into its own in hospitality. This is the 15th time the links course has hosted the competition. and 20.000 grandstand seats have been made available on the practice grounds and course itself. Special areas have been set aside for autograph hunting. and under 16s can take advantage of free golf lessons from PGA professionals. As usual there will be plenty of licensed areas in the tented village where spectators can take a break whilst keeping up with the action on one of the giant television screens.
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of such a prestigious tournament. We wait with baited breath for the first 'Easy Tiger' button pin. (Maureen Ellis) I One day passes for the championship are 835, tickets for qualifying rounds
