POETRY POETRY SLAM GZ, Sun 7 Apr Does the idea of a poetry event conjure up dull images of beardy, woolly jumper wearing types rambling on to one man and his dog about life, love and the universe? If so, Glasgow is playing host to an event that will change your opinion once and for all. It’s a poetry slam night and, according to organiser Jem Rolls, it is ‘Iess of a competition and more of a vibe thing and is miles away from your normal poetry gig’.

Each slammer has only two minutes to impress, and with a mix of performers from professionals to newcomers, there is a healthy mix of style, quality, technique and personality. Rolls believes that it is this combination of bite-sized pieces that makes the event even more fun and entertaining with ‘a good look inside people’s

The Slam motto is ‘come and have a go if you think you’re bard enough’. With past champs including Anne Wallace and Tim Turnbull this is quite a challenge. As well as the competitors, there will be other guests including Scottish comedian Des Clarke. Following on from this event there will be regular monthly poetry cabarets at Nice ’n’ Sleazy’s where you can enjoy this new comedy take on spoken word and help Rolls in his quest to generate a bigger Scottish poetry scene.
