STAND-UP

BRENDAN RILEY

The Stand, Edinburgh, Sat 16 Mar .0

There are truly appalling nights of comedy and there are those that simply make you want to top yourself in disgust at what your fellow man finds funny. If you. like most of this audience. find jokes about poor people. the disenfranchised. alcoholism and coming from Leith/Glasgow funny. then perhaps a) yOu should read more and b) you should stop watching so much rugby.

Craig Hill kicks things off with his awkward Scottish Graham Norton routine that simultaneously welcomes you in whilst kicking you with a sharpened gay toe. He is too good to be hosting this particular group of comedians but at this stage you don't realise that.

"I?

A truly appalling

ts sunker

Colin Ramone. guest spotter Marjorie and Paul McNeill follow. Some of their material is funny. most of it edgy. some of it dark. none of it hilarious. The audience lap it up despite the over-reliance by two of the artists on using the audience for material. It would have been easy to write this night off as a sad indication of the state of Scottish comedy. but w0rse from England. well Liverpool, is still to come. Squat. dark haired and bespeckled. of Irish catholic descent and softly spoken Brendan Riley has a likeable enough stage presence. it's just a shame his material stinks. He seems caught somewhere between the political comedy of Mark Thomas and Peter (not Phil) Kay's desire to tell a silly story. He finds it difficult to pull off either, floundering over the comedy options he

gives the audience.

Craig Hill returns to read out the raffle results and the cold night beckons. away from the stench of half-baked comedy. (Paul Dale)
