STAND-UP LEE EVANS Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Sat 30 & Sun 31 Mar
Comedy’s live wire
In a recent interview, Lee Evans admitted that he can only wear suits three times before dry cleaners refuse to touch them. Eeurgh. The amount of energy and perspiration this man expands on stage is staggering and when you consider that’s he’s signed up for an astonishing 85-date tour, that’s a whole lot of sweat-drenched made- to-measures and one very worn out comedian. ‘I didn’t realise how much it would knacker me,’ concedes Evans from his Reading hotel. ‘All me joints are aching; it’s mad. It’s like two hours on stage and your joints start to fall apart. I didn’t realise it would take about three weeks just to get used to it again, just doing that physical stuff.’
For a man who described gigging as being like going to the gym, the ‘Wired And Wonderful’ tour is one hell of a workout. Highly physical, preposterously bizarre ramblings, delivered at nose-bleed-speed momentum are typically Evans, and the self-confessed workaholic winces at the thought of his touring alternative. ‘l can’t sit around the house - I always feel a bit useless. When me wife comes and says to me, “You’ve got to put some shelves up,” I start to panic. I mean I help her out around the house, but shelves, I just can’t. I don’t get on with machines and stuff anyway, so I have to keep working. I put these security lights up the other day and you have to put them in the eaves of your roof and I went back the other day and they’re hanging by the wires. They don’t work at all, they just catch cats.’
The 37-year-old comic has come a long way since his Perrier peak of 93. Now more publicly recognised as a TV star and Hollywood actor, in his own eyes, Evans will only ever be a stand-up. If it takes three months of gruelling shows to reinstate his position in the public’s consciousness, then so be it. ‘I am a stand-up, I’m not an actor by any means. I mean this is what I do - that’s how I started and I think that’s probably how I’ll end up. I enjoy it so much, it’s really good fun. The only nerve-wracking thing is before a show I just really fill me pants. l’d forgot about that; that’s the scary bit.’
Evans’ acting resume contradicts his humble words. His rubber- faced idiocies have portrayed oddballs and social misfits in Mousehunt, There’s Something About Mary, The Martins, and the forthcoming Highbinders with Jackie Chan and Plots With A View with Christopher Walken. Most exciting though is his starring role in the follow-up to Chicken Run, The Hare And The Tortoise, in which Evans plays the voice of the Tortoise. With an estimated three years’ production timescale, he has some time to prepare to see himself as a be-shelled reptile. ‘What happens is they show you some of the animation that they’ve done, and it’s you but as a tortoise. Right now that freaks me out, because it’s all my little nuances,’ explains Evans. ‘What they were after was this character which is slightly, well has physical Tourette’s.’ Inspired casting.
