After the successes of Daft Punk and their Parisian cohorts, it now seems inconceivable that French music was once seen as perennially naff. It’s not just the Paris set that are making waves these days, either: since the success of their debut long player Lemon Orange, The Youngsters
have turned attention to their native
Montpelier.
‘I think Montpelier is the second city of France for electronic music,’ says Gil le Gamin, one half of the duo with Olivier M. ‘There are a lot of people making music, a lot of little labels here that are growing up, so if we wait, in one or two

years we will have a real new movement.’
Internationally, The Youngsters quickly drew attention to themselves thanks to an artfully crafted blend of house and techno, heavily reliant on Detroit influences, but suffused with melody and funk in place of the usual relentless locked-groove. ‘That is the first thing we try to do,’ says Le Gamin. ‘We can’t imagine music without melody. We have done tracks - like ‘Spanish Harlem’ - that are more minimal, but we like to get right inside our synthesisers to find some good sounds. We try to find
something good like that with some harmony, and then we try to find some
funk, some rhythm, but without it being too aggressive or just too boring.’ This approach found the duo friends in high places, notably Laurent Garnier - also playing at Pressure this month - who championed The Youngsters’ sound from the get go, promptly signing them to his F- Communications label. ‘We had done several records on my label,’ Le Gamin says. ‘From the first, Laurent was always playing our tracks, putting us on his playlists and sending us many faxes to say that we have done a
goodjob!
And Garnier is right: The Youngsters have indeed done a good job, whether it’s producing a debut disc that sounds more like a greatest hits compilation or moving effortlessly into the live arena. (Jack Mottram)
