Meet the polite nihilist. The kid with the replaceable head. The man who, more than most - if possibly less than Spike Milligan or Iggy Pop - invented punk rock. ’Cept where Iggy brought chaos and Spike introduced subversion, Hell was a concept whore. He flirted with poetry, cheated on philosophy, rejected literature (though later turned author) and ultimately fell in love/hate with himself.
‘Please kill me’ was his infamous T-shirt logo, inspiring Malcolm
McLaren to combine sex with gunplay and bring about anarchy in the UK. As

a face of the 705 New York underground and ex-member of both Television and The Heartbreakers, Hell’s own band The Voidoids were twitchy and scratchy, sporadically brilliant and commercially unsuccessful.
Maybe he was just too clever, too honest, too difficult. If comparison to Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard was not harsh enough, Julie Burchill also tagged him a ‘toad-eyed . . . pseudo seer’.
Fact was the guy’s words spoke to a generation weary of guitar solos and cocaine egos. ‘You can be your own hero,’ he told Lester Bangs in 1978. ‘And once everybody is their own hero, then everybody is gonna be able to communicate with each other on a real basis.’
Another veteran of New York punk, ex-Blondie Gary Valentine, summarises these heroics in a nutshell: ‘Hell took Rimbaud, Nietzche . . . Edgar Allen Poe’s living room, Francis Truffaut’s The 400 Blows, electric Bob Dylan . . . and an enervating obsession with death and threw them into the existential blender. Out popped a wild-haired, torn-bloused beatnik who looked like Frankenstein with anorexia.’
