CLUB LUSH!
Ego, Picardy Place. Edinburgh, 0131 478 7434. Next date Fri 28 Mar Lush; adj: 1) abounding in lavish growth; 2) succulent and fleshy; 3) luxurious, elaborate or opulent. These are the various definitions of the word ‘lush’ in the Collins English Dictionary and according to Dale Wilkinson, DJ and club promoter, they aren’t far from the truth.
Named after a friend who was a lush of the variety not described in Collins, Wilkinson describes the club as ‘poppy, boozy and fun’. Wilkinson and his partner Craig Dempster set up the monthly club in 2000 but his DJing began several years ago and involved a copy of the teenage compilation favourite Now 26.
At the tender age of 15 his father coerced him into DJing at a social club in Edinburgh, went along with his New 26 and entertained the troops. Since then he has abandoned the notorious compilations and moved into club DJing through Club Java, the Saturday Social and Why Not? to fulfil his dream of being part of the Joy team.
As well as all this, he and Craig decided to start up a gay night at Why Not? and, with the demise of Queer Sunday, they were able to move Lushl to Ego on a Sunday night. Since then they have moved to the popular Friday night slot with Wilkinson keeping the crowds happy with his mix of accessible dance music, funky house and the odd old skool anthem thrown in from time to time.
Craig, on the other hand, goes for more of a pop vibe with everything from his idol Kylie to the not-so-perfect Steps. They seem to have found the right formula with a full house every month and an ever growing membership which entitles you to reduced price entry, priority entry on busy nights and first dlbs for live PA tickets.
As well as doing Lush! the boys also DJ on a Saturday night at Edinburgh’s best gay bar, Planet Out, where they take it in turns to perform some pre-club turntable trickery. According to Wilkinson plans for the future include lots more Lush! events which they intend to carry on until clubbers get bored of them. But before that happens there will be more live PAs (I’m not one to spread rumours, but Sonia’s name was mentioned) as well as plenty of guest DJs such as Michelle from Poptastic and Maggie from Joy as well as the possibility of going fortnightly.
But don’t panic if you are too young to go clubbing, because there's also the option of going to Lush Puppies before the main event for some under-18 sipping of fizzy pop and dancing to some chart topping sounds. Some of which you may even find on Now 50. (Jane Hamilton)
