It's all Irvine Welsh's fault. Or was it Zammo in Grange Hill? Or was it the child found with heroin in a schoolyard? Everyone is touched differently by drug abuse and it's hard to put your finger on that one thing that makes you think about drug culture just that little bit more seriously. But not everyone w0uld agree it's a serious problem: the Dutch have got the right attitude; there‘s a brown cafe opening in Edinburgh: this very magazine flippantly polls our attitudes to drugs. Recent legislation has blurred the previous hard line against ‘illegal' drugs and the questions posed by drug use have never had so much meaning.
The Health Education Board for Scotland (HEBS) takes an active interest in promoting awareness of the dangers of drugs. Taking a predominantly preventative stance. HEBS television adverts in particular have been acknowledged for successfully raising awareness of heath issues in young people: who can forget its girl-band inspired smoking campaign or the current school corridor flashbacks to boozing?
In terms of drug prevention. its ‘Split Second‘ campaign. dually illustrating the consequences of a choice to take drugs or not. came about after a worrying statistic showed yOung people no longer thought of heroin as the most feared drug. coinciding with an increase in the number of youths smoking heroin. Much of its high profile work is aimed at yOung people. but it is a valuable resource and weapon in battling the harmful use of drugs.
A research specialist in drug misuse for HEBS. Sally Hall is at the forefront of assessing drug use in Scotland and in generating ideas to combat misuse. Her talk for Morningside Justice and Peace Group should be an interesting insight into the trends of a once taboo subject now very much part of everyone‘s culture.
