l FESTIVAL ' cm or LOVE
Various venues, Fri 8-Sun 17 Feb
Love is all around - or at least it will be in Glasgow when it officially becomes the City of Love. This is because it is one of the three cities that hold the remains of Saint Valentine.
The festival is being promoted by Neil Baxter who explains that ‘it is not just about passion and all things carnal but is a message about love and all that is positive about it.’ The city is taking Baxter at his word and celebrating with art exhibitions and wedding shows as well as poetry, music and theatre. The highlights include Bette Bourne playing Quentin Crisp in the one man show Resident Alien at the Tron (a hit on last year’s Edinburgh Fringe), Eddie Reader performing live at St Andrews in the Square, the Sense Scotland fashion show at Princes Square and the sweep-you-off-your-feet film Casablanca at the Grosvenor Cinema. There’s even a big wheel for lovers in George Square.
The history of Glasgow’s love connection is not lost with an Ecumenical Celebration at the shrine of St Valentine in the Church of John Duns Scotus. As Baxter says: ‘The festival is creating something which the people of Glasgow can celebrate — love and all its colourfulness.’ (Jane Hamilton)
