TECHNO LOST Studio 24, Edinburgh, Fri 8 Feb
Regarded by many as the saviour of UK techno, Surgeon (aka Anthony Child) has finally made time on his never-ending world DJ tour to pay a visit to Edinburgh and Lost
Child has been perfecting his cerebral-versus-physical electronic formula for the best part of ten years, with his love of classic experimentalists (emphasis on the ‘mental’) Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Steve Reich and Coil melding with his favoured punishing bottom end and twitching, glitching percussion. Such is his t‘rolificacy that he needs two of his own labels to release material, Dynamic Tension and Counterbalance, the latter of which recently released the excellent ‘Screw The Roses’ EP.
Lost promoter Mike ‘Lav’ Lavin puts the resurgence of UK techno down to Surgeon and his contemporaries from Punish Records, House of God and Regis and Female. ‘Over the past two or three years support for techno had really tailed off,’ he says. ‘Clubs in Edinburgh that used to pull crowds of 600 dropped to around 200. People had had enough of it, but through Surgeon and people like him there’s been a reinterest. There isn’t the number of clubbers in Edinburgh like there is in Glasgow, so it has all gone underground, but we won’t pander to the mainstream just to get the
punters in.’
Resident Lost DJ Neil Templar agrees and sees the way forward for techno. ‘lt’s the only thing that’s stayed underground,’ he says. ‘Everything else has become commercial except for techno which just has little elements filtering through. I’ve been playing more electro to try to give Lost a bit more structure instead of it being ‘bang, bang, bang’ from start to
finish.’
‘What we’ve tried to do,’ says Mike Lavin, ‘is have the more intelligent, interesting side of techno and electro, while still playing a lot of the heavy,
pounding stuff for the old crusty crowd we inherited when we took over the
club Apex. We make sure that each night has something for both sides.’ And with the pedigree of guests such as Surgeon, previous appearances
by Green Velvet and Si Begg, and Chris Liebing to come, it looks like the
Edinburgh underground will remain Lost in techno. (Steven Clark)
