Insanely successful night based on a complex numerical flirting system: everyone gets a number upon entry. then. if someone catches your eye. you write their number on the board next to your own. with the idea being that they then rush up to you and get biz-ay. Music-wise. it’s commercial house and trance from Sexy Steve and Kinky

HIP HOP FREAKMOVES Glasgow School of Art, Thu 7 Feb
B-boy racers Dema and Nice
When Freakmoves marks its first birthday on 7 February, there’ll be more cause to celebrate than is usual for a Glasgow club breaking out of its infancy. In a city that traditionally prefers house to hip hop, the popularity of Dema and Nice’s Thursday night residency is a worthy achievement.
This is due in part to the Freaks’ relaxed attitude to a genre most often characterised by posturing and exclusivity. ‘We try and leave our night open to anyone, not just hip hop heads with big baggy trousers,’ says Nice. ‘If someone who’s not previously heard it comes along and has a good time, then I think we’ve done a good job.’
The Freaks’ multi-faceted music policy also helps: they’re as likely to play Eve or Snoop as they are classic Tribe. But it’s the way they play ‘em: on four decks the Freaks are unmatchable, alternating seamless blends with finger-breaking (but ultimately musical) scratch routines.
Such turntable telepathy stems from a long-term friendship cemented by a passion for beats and cuts. In the mid-903, Nice started spinning at East End bar McChuills. As Dema recalls: ‘Nice was ill one week . . .’
Well, we all knew he was ill on those turntables . . .
‘No, he actually vomited in the toilets,’ he says. ‘He asked me to take over cos he knew I could mix; I used to make tapes in his house. That was
my first taste of DJing.’
While Dema is sticking with club DJing for now (the only competition he’s won was for a day’s jeep-driving in his work at Christmas), Nice has his sights set on the competitive circuit, spurred on by a third place in the DMC Scottish finals. ‘l’m going in for the DMCs again this year, and hopefully some other things,’ he says. ‘Just to get my name about and . . .
to try and win.’
And what about the next year of Freakmoves? Any plans? ‘Keep it fresh, I think’, says Nice. ‘Keep moving the whole night forward, not just the music but the visuals as well. Just keep moving, keep changing.’
