Cauliflower power: David Hughes
Fighting post-holiday flab? DaVid Hughes has an unconventional but sure-tire weight-loss strategy. Forget the gym. ballet class 0r Pilates. Bulimia. too. is passe. Instead. Hughes advises. ‘be a greengrocer'.
He's almost serious. Late last year this erstwhile member of London Contemporary Dance Theatre. Rambert Dance Company and Siobhan DaVies' troope opened his own shop in Yorkshire. where he was raised. ‘In a fast few weeks my pants were dropping off me.‘ Hughes admits with a chuckle.
It's not that Hughes. widely acknowledged as one of the UK's strongest movers. has turned his back on Terpsichore. On the contrary. he's about to revive a programme of solo dances called MAP. It features highly contrasting works by four stellar dance-makers: modern dance veteran Robert Cohan. Rambert artistic director Christopher Bruce. contempOrary dance doyenne Siobhan Davres and ubiquitOLis y0ung hot-shot Wayne McGregor.
Hughes deems the Cohan. set to Mahler. 'otd-fasl‘iioned and traditional. but it was a great chance to work ‘-.'.’lil‘. ob one-to-one.' Davies' piece is an interpretation of Debussys L'Apres-rnidi akin faune. With her. Hughes says. ‘you're given tasks and ideas and then go into yoorself so much.‘ The moves and narrative of Bruce's Hurricane. Caed to a (lfi‘Jlllg Bob Dylan protest song. were fully thought-out beforehand. The McGregor was Just plain tough. ‘but once yOu get through the barrier it feels great!' There's also a short film and a meet-the-artist session post- performance.
Hughes is feeling priyileged ‘These people arc- like my gurus. Each has their own philosophy of where they come from and where they're gomg.‘ He's not Sure JUST where he goes after MAP.
