BOOK EVENT SUSIE ORBACH

Borders Books, 283 Buchanan Street, 222 7700. Wed 9 Jan.

‘Not for me thanks I'm on a diet . . . oh what the hell. I'll start again on Monday.” Recognise this? Anyone who has ever dieted will and. considering approximately 480:: of women age 25—35 are on some kind of diet. it's

frighteningly common.

It is because of this trend that Susie Orbach wrote her 1978 classic Fat Is A Feminist Issue. tackling our unhealthy attitude towards size. weight and body image. Two decades on. she has followed it up with On Eating (Penguin £4.99) whicn looks at the role food plays in everyday life. Orbach believes the problem of body fasosm and our continual struggle with food is reaching a ‘fantastically serious level'. She sees the situation as a public health emergency, as women start to diet at a vOunger age and more men than ever before worry about what

they eat.

After many years as a psychotherapist working with women (including Princess Diana) with eating problems. Orbach feels much of the trouble stems from society and the media telling us we should conform to a mono-culture in which we all look the same skinny. This attitude causes people to develop an abnormal attitude towards food and Orbach uses this book to help women break free from the destructive dieting-and-denial merry-go-round and transform their eating habits into ‘an ambiguous source of pleasure'.
