the 2002 dance calendar opens wrth two classics from the ballet canon. St Petersburg Ballet Theatre is at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre (8—12 Jan) with the Most Popular Ballet In The World . . . Ever! — Swan Lake — while Chisinau National Ballet returns to the Edinburgh Playhouse with its rather llllllif3l)ll‘(}(l version of The Nutcracker ltd—19 Jan). Far more exciting is the arrival of David Hughes at the Traverse (12) Jan). when the former Rambert and LCDT dancer will perform works by Wayne McGregor, Robert Cohan. Siobhan Davies and Christopher Bruce.
On a slightly larger scale. Riverdance rolls into town for another mammoth run at the Playhouse i130 Jan—2 Marl. featuring much of the original material but apparently with a whole new wardrobe icontain yourself). Rather less jovial is The [)ear/y Departed. the latest offering from X Factor Dance Company premiering at the Traverse it Feb) before touring. As ever. the company is thought provoking. this time over wl'iere we go when we die.
New Moves returns as New Territories playing across Glasgow l 1 3 Feb—i 6 Mar). Ultima Vez and O Vertigo will be in town. plus a spectacular dance work from Italy's Materiali Resistenti featuring a 30ft \."-.Iater flume.
With new skipper Davrd Nixon on board. Northern Ballet Theatre is at Edinburgh Festival Theatre (26 Feb—2 Mar) performing its reworking of Puccini's Madame Butterfly. Conversely. Scottish Ballet will be preparing to bid adieu to its artistic director Robert North when it stages The Two Pigeons at the same venue lit-(3 Ar )t‘l and Glasgow's Theatre Royal (16—20 Apr).
Alsc on the hori/on are Norman Douglas' Ensemble Group with a major new piece. Wis! ring For The Moon at Edinburgh Festival Theatre (25 Apr) and Glasgow's Tramway iii-~11 May). No doubt much excitement wrll surround the arrival of hot young things Nederlands Dans Theater 2 at Glasgow's Theatre Royal (1/1 & 15 Jun) and the first visit for over five years from Birmingham Royal Ballet at Edinburgh Festival Theatre ulun).
Details of Edinburgh International Festival's dance programme are still sketchy but Italian maverick Emio Greco is set to return. And of course. we can always rely on a Visit from Rambert at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre Oct). presenting Christopher Bruce's new work. Grinning In Your Face. I'm sure we will be.
